The criminal justice system makes significant decisions regarding bail, pretrial detention, and sentencing that are often not visible to the public. The Dauphin County Bail Fund Court Watch program observes criminal court proceedings in Dauphin County. Courtwatching takes place at Dauphin County Prison, the Dauphin County Courthouse and the Magisterial District Judge offices including preliminary and revocation hearings. During these proceedings, individuals face the risk of incarceration or reincarceration in the case of a probation revocation. Our presence during these sessions helps to provide a clearer understanding of the realities behind the headlines, which may not always accurately portray the ongoing issues within the carceral system. Courtwatching empowers community members to promote accountability and advocate for meaningful change by gathering data and sharing our findings publicly.
